Hoops and Heart: Calgary Academy Students Rally Behind Alumni

On January 8 and 9 Calgary Academy hosted the annual Knights’ Classic Senior Boys Basketball Tournament.

This year, the tournament had an added altruistic component, raising over $3,000 for Syn.ap.tic, a local spinal injury nonprofit in support of recent CA graduate and former Knights athlete, Erik Dickson.

Last year Erik suffered an accident that left him with a broken neck and in a wheelchair. Many current Knights athletes remember Erik as he graduated CA in 2014 and played on several teams. Erik is currently fundraising on behalf of Syn.ap.tic for three pieces of specialized equipment for spinal injury patients.

Erik spoke to CA students at a pep rally prior to the tournament, where he shared what his experience has taught him, and connected what he learned as an athlete to life after graduation.

The Knights’ Classic is one of the many ways our athletes showcase the REACH principles on and off the court. The coaches are proud of how our team rallied together and connected to the larger CA community.
